Golden sunlight, stunning surf beaches and holiday resorts are the Sunshine Coast’s trademark but for those in the know it has always been a genuine cycling mecca with truly magnificent and equally challenging roads.

Velothon Sunshine Coast (13-16 July) offers the ultimate winter cycling escape, providing riders with the opportunity to share the long kept secret of the spectacular hinterland and seductive coastal roads that are as much a feast for the eyes as they are a challenge for the legs.

IRONMAN Oceania, Regional Director, Rebecca Van Pooss said the Three Day (361km) and the One Day (155km or 95km) courses have been finalised and he invites all riders to find out more about the wonders of Velothon Sunshine Coast on the website course pages.

"The Sunshine Coast is custom made for cycling and what makes the Velothon truly unique is the combination of the intensely beautiful scenery and how the roads keep the rider both entertained and switched on. Just when you are being lulled and feeling comforted by the beauty of the Sunshine Coast hinterland and the long shadow of the Glass House Mountains, you are quickly brought back to reality by the true challenge of Velothon, the consistent rollercoaster undulations and the sharp climbs."

"Some riders who have experienced the course first hand have said that Velothon Sunshine Coast walks the line between beauty and brutality. While challenging at times, there is incredible diversity throughout the course and the fast and dramatic stretches of road and stunning descents make it a very achievable and an incredibly rewarding experience," she said.

Matt Keenan, the voice of Australian cycling, is a keen rider and he had the opportunity to be one of the first people to experience Velothon Sunshine Coast earlier this year.

"Putting the event on in July is a smart move. The events calendar isn’t as busy at that time of year and it’s a great excuse for those from the southern states to escape the depths of winter. Plus there’s the added buzz of the Tour de France in July that just makes you want to get out and ride."

"The parts of the course that I enjoyed the most was riding the rolling roads where you are hitting speeds into the mid 40kms and there are a few climbs in front of you that are short. You are not sure if it is big or small chain ring and you punch over them."

"The big challenge of Velothon is a sense of the fatigue building up but it will give riders a genuine appreciation for what happens to athletes at the Tour De France. That is what distinguishes Velothon Sunshine Coast from the other Gran Fondos," he said.

Takes riders across the 118km route from Sippy Downs to Buderim, riders will encounter relentless short form climbs, fast descents, and amazing scenery, reaching close to 500m altitude in some sections of the course. The main element of the first stage is the constant undulations. This relentless nature of the course will test rider’s legs more than they may anticipate.

Start next to Moffatts Beach and finish in the lovely town of Woombye in the hinterlands. Day two has some blissful rolling flats and engaging climbing. This is the sprinter’s day. A sprint finish gives everyone a chance to claim enviable bragging rights.

Ride along the beach from Mudjimba to Noosa to stretch those day three muscles before heading inland toward Kenilworth where more challenges await. The inland section of this course will be either the "highlight or the bane" of your Velo as you will need to conquer the beast known as Obi Obi Hill that reaches a scary 27 per cent gradient. Riders will be tackling it after two hard days in the saddle, so be prepared to push yourself on this monster of a climb.

IRONMAN Oceania Director, Dave Beeche said Velothon Sunshine Coast is pleased to announce Blackchrome Sportswear as its Official Cycling Apparel Partner.

"Velothon is about the exhilaration of the open road and revelling in the camaraderie of the peloton, living the dream and riding for the love of it. When you are being challenged by the road, riders knows the importance of wearing good quality, high performance cycling apparel. I am very pleased that Blackchrome will be with us on every hill, every corner and every descent of the Velothon Sunshine Coast," he said.
