Official Charity Partner
World Bicycle Relief
Velothon Sunshine Coast and global, non-profit organization World Bicycle Relief are joining forces to mobilise the power of the humble “pushy” to help bring about massive social change and poverty alleviation in developing countries across the globe
World Bicycle Relief (WBR) builds and distributes specially-designed, locally assembled rugged Buffalo Bicycles to successfully address the great need for reliable, affordable transportation in rural areas of developing countries.
World Bicycle Relief (WBR) was founded in 2005 by F.K. Day and Leah Missbach Day in response to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. As a founder of SRAM and leader in product development, his role offered a unique opportunity to problem-solve with other cycling industry leaders.
World Bicycle Relief has distributed close to half a million specially designed bicycles and trained more than 2,200 bicycle mechanics in areas in developing countries.
Together with World Bicycle Relief, Velothon Sunshine Coast is aiming to raise $30,000 for the charity, which will bring 150 buffalo bicycles to children in need in Africa.
Matt Keenan, official WBR and Velothon Sunshine Coast Brand Ambassador, said he is very pleased to be part of the partnership because the bicycle has been shown to be one of the best means to eradicate poverty in developing nations.
“Bikes have given me my closest friendship group, my employment and my life is much better for having cycling part of it. But for people living in poverty a bike can be life changing.”
“For those in the poorest countries moving from walking to a bike creates so many opportunities that I take for granted and most of us in the western world take for granted.”
“A bike provides better access to clean water and health care, significantly reduced travel times to school and an education, which is the most powerful tool there is to reducing poverty.”
“To be an ambassador for World Bicycle Relief, and trying to improve the lives of others, is a privilege. World Bicycle Relief has delivered close to 500,000 bikes since 2005. I look forward to working with them help deliver many more life changing bikes,” Matt said.
